POSITION DESCRIPTION

TITLE: Building Based Substitute Teacher

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

1. Must be at least 18 years of age
2. Candidate must have completed a minimum of two years of college
3. Must hold a valid New York State teaching certificate or be enrolled in a program leading to certification to quality for teaching in excess of 40 days in one school year.
4. Candidate must agree to authorize Lockport City School District to conduct a Criminal History Search/fingerprinting
5. I-9 Employment Eligibility in compliance with Immigrations Reform and Control Act
6. Completion of mandatory training sessions

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES, & PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS:

1. Must possess good, moral character
2. Must be able to follow oral and written directions
3. Must have the ability to establish effective working relationships with staff and students
4. Ability to maintain effective classroom management

ACCOUNTABILITY:

The Substitute Teacher reports directly to a Building or Program Administrator or in accordance with currently established district and collective bargaining procedures and evaluation criteria.

NATURE OF THE POSITION:

The work involves responsibility assisting students in the absence of the regular staff member. The Building Based Substitute Teacher will exercise some independent judgment in the application of prescribed procedures and methods to routine situations. The Building Based Substitute will manage students learning in accordance with the goals and directives of the district.

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

● Reports to the main office upon arrival at school; checks mailbox of absent teacher for materials requiring immediate attention; request clarification of school rules and procedures, if necessary
● Maintains and respects confidentiality of students and school personnel information
● Maintains a discipline and classroom control that fosters a safe and positive environment for all students and staff in accordance with school and county policies
● Ensures the adequate supervision to assure health, welfare, and safety of all students
● Takes all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials and facilities
● Reports all student injuries, accidents, illnesses, and discipline problems to the appropriate authority immediately or as soon as is reasonably possible
● Implements lesson plans, while ensuring the integrity of academic time and in a matter which motivates students to learn and participate
● May need to create lesson plans, grade or evaluate student work, and complete tasks related to grading or reporting to parents
● May need to exchange information with parent/legal guardians
● Organizes students for effective instruction
● Dismisses all students from the classroom before leaving the building
● Collects and places students’ papers on the regular teacher’s desk
● Returns instructional materials, equipment, and key to proper place
● Determines if their services will be required for the next school day
● Complies with and supports school and division regulations and policies
● Model non-discriminatory practices in all activities
● Performs other related duties as assigned by building administrator(s) in accordance with district policies and practices

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

● Duties performed typically in school settings to include: classrooms, gymnasium, cafeteria, auditorium and recreational areas.
● Frequent walking, standing, stooping, lifting up to approximately 30 pounds and occasional lifting of equipment and/or material weighing up to 40 pounds may be required.
● Other physical activities may be required.
● Occasional travel with students on field trips may be necessary.
● Vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word. Hearing is required to receive information at normal spoken word levels.
● Visual acuity is required for preparing and analyzing written or computer data, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities.
● The worker is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions, noise and hazards.
● Occasional movement of students by wheelchairs and other mechanical devices may be required.
● Regular Instruction to special needs children may be necessary.
● Daily personal and close contact with children to provide classroom management and learning environment support is required on assigned days.
● Regular contact with other staff members and building administrator(s) is required on assigned days as a substitute.
